Getting Started / Beginner Questions
Journey Tennis programs are available for players of a wide range of ages and skill levels. Many children begin tennis from around 3–10 years old through modified beginner programs using smaller courts, lower compression balls and age-appropriate equipment.
Our coaching team places players into appropriate classes based on age, experience, confidence and current ability to ensure they learn in the most suitable environment.
If you're unsure where to start, our trial process can help guide you toward the right program.
Yes, we offer free trial sessions for all new players.
A trial session allows us to assess a player’s current level, introduce them to our coaching environment, and recommend the most suitable class or program moving forward.
To arrange a free trial, simply click on the FREE TRIAL button located on this page, leave your details, and we'll get back to you shortly. Or, call us on 0413 274 964, or email on coaching@journeytennis.com.au
Hot Shots lessons are group lessons in a Tennis Australia endorsed, modified junior tennis program designed for younger players and beginners using smaller courts, lighter racquets and modified balls.
Players in Hot Shots group classes are typically aged 3–10 years. The program includes Red, Orange and Green Ball stages, with modified balls designed to vary in compression, bounce and speed at each level, making tennis easier for younger players to control, rally and enjoy.
At Journey Tennis, our group lessons build on these foundations, with classes catering to beginner, intermediate and developing players based on age and ability.
We also offer group lessons beyond the Hot Shots pathway, with programs available for teenagers and adults of all skill levels.
Programs & Lesson Types
Group Lessons, including Hot Shots lessons, are great for beginners and developing players. With a maximum of 5 players per group and 45-minute lessons, participants learn technical skills, movement, rallying, game play.
Squads are designed for players seeking a greater challenge, stronger training habits and increased match development. Squad programs typically involve higher intensity training, tactical development and preparation for competition, running for 90-120 minutes.
Private Lessons are one-on-one sessions providing individualised coaching, targeted technical work and personalised development plans. Semi private lessons are two-on-one sessions with participants placed together if they are of a suitable level. Sessions are 30, 45, or 60 minutes long. Longer sessions can be arranged by request.
The best program for your child depends on their age, experience, goals and current ability level.
New players typically begin in beginner, Hot Shots, or developmental group programs, while more experienced or competitive players may be suited to squads, private or semi-private coaching.
We use trials and coach assessments to help place players appropriately, ensuring they are challenged, supported and enjoying their tennis.
Journey Tennis offers coaching opportunities for adult beginners, returning players and developing adults.
Whether you're picking up a racquet for the first time, returning after a break, or looking to improve your game, our coaching team can help you build skills, confidence and enjoyment in a supportive environment.

Players typically progress through stages including:
- Beginner participation and skill foundations in the Hot Shots program
- Developmental group programs as players graduate from Hot Shots
- Performance squads and advanced training as players progress through association competition and local tournaments
- Competition preparation and pathway opportunities for those playing at state level or higher
The pathway focuses on long-term development, strong fundamentals, game understanding and helping each player progress at an appropriate pace.
Progression is based on more than age alone.
Our coaches consider factors such as:
- Technical development and competency
- Movement and athletic ability
- Game awareness and consistency
- Attitude, effort and training habits
- Competition readiness and personal goals
Players are invited into squads when coaches believe they are ready for increased training demands and development opportunities.
