Your Tennis Journey

A clear development pathway for every player

At Journey Tennis, we believe the best player development occurs when players are supported, challenged appropriately, and their individual needs are met.

Your tennis journey is our structured development pathway that helps parents and players clearly understand:

  • where a player is starting
  • what they are learning at each stage
  • how progress is measured
  • and what opportunities come next

Each player's journey is guided by their age, ability, efforts, and individual goals they may have set.

Stage 1: Hot Shots

Learning tennis for life

Hot Shots is the foundation of your tennis journey and the ideal entry point for children aged 3-10+ years.

Hot Shots introduces tennis through play-based learning, using the right equipment, court size, and activities to suit each child's stage of development.

The program goes beyond teaching tennis skills - it helps children develop:

  • confidence
  • coordination
  • social skills
  • problem-solving
  • persistence and resilience
  • communication & cooperative skills

All sessions are delivered in a safe, inclusive, and fun environment, where children learn to enjoy the game while building strong foundations.

What is Hot Shots Tennis?

Hot Shots uses:

  • low-compression balls
  • smaller courts
  • age-appropriate racquets
  • game-based activities

This allows every child - regardless of size or experience - to succeed early and develop correct movement and technique naturally.

The use of appropriately sized courts and equipment, combined with well-designed activities, allows children to grow naturally and confidently into the game.

Designed for every child, at every ability

Hot Shots is purpose-built so children:
  • enjoy the activities and environment
  • experience early success
  • develop confidence through play
  • progress with competent skills

Low-compression balls, appropriately sized courts, and suitable equipment helps children develop correct techniques early and build lasting good habits.

Hot Shots progress & development

Within Hot Shots, players move through guided levels that reflect their growing ability and understanding of the game.

  • Early levels focus on coordination and cooperation
  • Later levels introduce rallying, serving, returning, and scoring
  • Lesson plans are aligned to each stage of learning
  • Coaches assess readiness before progression

As children develop knowledge, ability, and confidence, they naturally move from cooperative play toward real match play.

Each child's journey through the coloured ball stages should be aimed to master each stage, rather than race through the stages. Skill development occurs at different rates for different players; patience and understanding is crucial in developing young players confidence and skill base.

Stage 2: Junior Development

From learning to playing

Junior Development bridges the gap between Hot Shots and performance pathways.

Players focus on:

  • consistency of play and understanding
    of tactical fundamentals
  • emphasise the importance of the two most played shots in the game -
    serving and returning
  • court positioning and awareness, correct movement patterns
  • understand match play, routines, and different styles of play

This stage supports children who want to:

  • continue learning in group lessons
  • join development squads
  • play socially or competitively
  • progress to private or semi private learning opportunities

Progression remains ability-led, not age-driven.

Stage 3: Junior Performance

For players ready to commit

Junior Performance is for players who:

  • enjoy and thrive in competitive situations
  • want to accelerate their game faster with greater results
  • are ready for higher training intensity
    and volume

This stage may include:

  • Squad training
  • Private or semi-private coaching
  • Competition and tournament pathways
  • Performance-focused development

Not every child needs to reach this stage - and that's okay.
Your Tennis Journey supports tennis for life, not just competition.
